We have just released version 4.2.4 of our Syncplify.me Server! software. This version features the following improvements:

  • Fixed: occasional lingering of sockets in CLOSE_WAIT status when behind firewalls that act as proxies
  • Fixed: occasional huge delay upon accepting new connections when the number of VFSs is high

Warning: upgrading to this version from any version prior to 4.0.34 will invalidate your license, so please if you are a customer – before you upgrade – contact us to request a license reset.

Note: if after the update you notice any unexpected behavior in the web interface, just hit Ctrl-F5 in your browser; that will force the browser to reload the page as well as all back-end scripts and update the ones that may have been cached from previous versions of the software.

As usual you can download this new release from our website.

Regarding the upcoming version 5

We, the Syncplfy team, have been asked by few customers and prospect customers about the upcoming version 5 of Syncplify.me Server! the release date for the last few months now. We know the release date keeps being postponed due to several reasons, some that were out of our hands. Syncplify’s goal and us, behind it, is to provide the most reliable and secure product to you. That’s one reason why we keep delaying the release of the new version. We run and re-run multiple tests and sessions to ensure the product satisfies us, then to relay the satisfaction to you. Although we understand some might be upset by the fact of “unfulfilled expectations”, we focus on long-term satisfaction and security. Thus, the Syncplify team asks you, our dear customers, to accept our apologies and continue to support us.

Thank you and sincerely yours,

Syncplify team

No, we’re not vulnerable to the libssh attack CVE-2018-10933

Many of our customers these days have sent us emails asking our team if Syncplify software products are affected by the libssh vulnerability documented in CVE-2018-10933.

Good news: none of our software products is vulnerable.

As mentioned in previous articles in this knowledge base, our products are not based on 3rd party open source libraries and solutions (like OpenSSL, OpenSSH, libssh, …) therefore our software does not inherit their bugs.

What’s new in the upcoming Syncplify.me Server! v5

Syncplify.me Server! version: 5.0.0+

While the step from v3 to v4 was somewhat “epic” (as 80%+ of the code was rewritten from scratch) the upcoming Syncplify.me Server! v5 will, instead, build upon the rock-solid foundation of v4 and expand and improve its features significantly. Version 5 will also be our most cloud-enabled version to date.

Here’s a list of some of the most important upcoming new features our users will find in Syncplify.me Server! v5:

  • New binding structure: each virtual server can bind to multiple IP addresses and ports, with concurrent support for IPv4 and IPv6
  • Entirely redesigned HA (high-availability) functional model: v4 came with an extremely powerful support for HA scenarios, but it was quite an ordeal to configure high-availability, v5 instead will feature super-easy and nearly automatic HA configuration; furthermore, while with v4 there was a requirement for 5 VMs to achieve full high-availability of both SFTP nodes and backend database, v5 features a totally new synchronization engine that allows for full high-availability with just 2 VMs
  • New Web Configuration Manager: new features require a way to be configured, so the web configuration manager is also going to be improved
  • New Web File Transfer and Sharing Client: a web-app that works similarly to an (S)FTP client to upload and download files, with the added bonus of being capable of sharing files (kind of like DropBox) via special protected web links (URLs)
  • New VFS types: on top of the existing Disk and DiskAES256, we are adding FileContainer, FileContainerAES256, and more to come in v5.1 (like SFTPProxy, FTPSProxy, AWSS3, Azure, …)
  • New permission override on any subfolder (even nested inside virtual folders): granular control over users’ permissions on any real and/or virtual folder
  • Much better Active Directory support
    • New LDAP support to query external LDAP/AD servers
    • Queries via LDAP on either sAMAccountName or userPrincipalName (or even both)
  • New per-user statistics (last login, uploaded/downloaded files and KB)
  • Specific VFS.ImportFile and VFS.ExportFile functions to import and export files between encrypted VFSs and the actual underlying file system
  • Added many functions to consume cloud-based services, like:
    • New SendMailViaAWSSES function to send emails via AWS Simple Email Service
    • New SendMailViaSendGrid function to send emails via SendGrid
    • New SendToSlack function to post messages to Slack via their Incoming Web Hooks
    • Added functions to send SMS text messages via the following cloud services: Twilio, Esendex, BulkSMS, Zang (fka TelAPI)
    • New SendToExceptionless function to send messages to the Exceptionless cloud service
    • New SendViaPushover to send messages to mobile devices via the Poshover cloud service
    • New IPGeoLocation function to geographically locate clients IP addresses
    • Improved HttpGet and HttpPost functions, with added parameters to make it easier to call remote 3rd party REST API

The list here above is not comprehensive, in fact v5 will come with the above new features and more. And, as usual, all customers with an active subscription will receive the upgrade to v5 for free as soon as it’s released.

There is no set release date yet for v5, but we will be going BETA soon. Stay tuned!

We are happy to announce that the first public BETA of Syncplify.me Server! version 5.0 is finally available for public download.

Some time ago we also wrote an article on this Knowledge Base detailing many of the new and improved features that you can now experience by downloading and trying out this first V5 public BETA.

It goes without saying that, being this a BETA version, it may still have some bugs and/or issues that don’t make it suitable to deployment in production environments. But, please, go ahead and install it in your test/staging environments; try it out, report any issues, help us take it to the level of quality that our final V5 release needs to offer.

We’ve also published a video to walk you through the first installation and setup of the new version 5.0, you can check it out here:

Thank you!

ObjectName and VirtualObjectName deprecated in V5

Syncplify.me Server! version: 5.0.0+

Starting from version 5.0 of Syncplify.me Server! the ObjectName and VirtualObjectName variables (scripting engine and event-handling subsystem) will be deprecated.

They are still available, but they will be removed in future versions, so we do recommend to update all scripts that may be using such variables and make sure you use the new ones:

Session.ObjectName: substitutes ObjectName
Session.VirtualObjectName: substitutes VirtualObjectName

There are also two new similar values that will normally be empty, but may contain a string value only when responding to client commands like COPY, MOVE or RENAME. Such variables are:

Session.ObjectName2: contains the destination file name, relative to the local file system, for the object to be copied to, moved to, or renamed to (example: C:\SFTPData\NewFileName.txt)
Session.VirtualObjectName2: contains the destination file name, in POSIX-compliant format, for the object to be copied to, moved to, or renamed to (example: /SomeFolder/NewFileName.txt)

Syncplify.me Server! V5 Beta-2

We have released the second beta of Syncplify.me Server! V5.

This new beta fixes all the issues and bugs that have been reported by our users and customers, and is – in general – much more solid than the first beta.

In particular, this second beta can upgrade older v3.x and v4.x, but obviously only and exclusively in test environments. Being a beta version, deployment in production environments is strictly forbidden.

Furthermore, this new beta also allows for deployment of High Availability (HA) installations, so our users and customers can finally try out the brand new – and much improved – HA scheme that V5 incorporates.

Everything you need to know about Syncplify.me Server! V5 license codes

$
0
0

In this article we provide a compendium, sort of a FAQ, regarding the most common questions and pieces of knowledge that every Syncplify.me Server! user should know about the new version 5.x licensing system. So here we go:

What’s the license code format?

V5 license codes look like this: V5XX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

Will my old (V4, V3, …) license code work if I upgrade to V5?

No. As you can guess by the different license code format, you will need an entirely new license code to upgrade to V5. Good news is, though, that if you are covered by an update/upgrade/support subscription, you can request one for free by simply opening a support ticket here.

I have an active V3/V4 update/upgrade/support subscription, and I wish to convert it to a V5 update/upgrade/support subscription. How do I do that?

Simply open a support ticket here and our team will provide a dedicated link and proper instructions on how to do so.

I run Syncplify.me Server! on dynamic hardware, and every so often my V3/V4 license reverted back to “free” because hardware changes were detected. Will this still happen with V5 licenses?

We’ve done a lot of work to change this behavior, and we are confident that deactivations “by mistake” should not occur anymore. Our software can now tell the difference between, say, resizing an existing VM, and moving to an entirely different VM. Your V5 license will remain active as long as you make changes to the hardware of your existing VM, and will self-deactivate only if you try to use it also on a different VM. This provides us with a decent level of protection against abuse, but – more importantly – provides our customers with the level of flexibility they need to run our software in virtualized/cloud/elastic environments.

Version 5 maintenance/support subscription explained

$
0
0

As of Syncplify.me Server! version 5.x, we’ve applied a few technical changes in the way the maintenance/support subscription works. Nothing has changed from a philosophical/legal standpoint, only the technology has changed.

Just as before, you need an active maintenance/support subscription to:

  • install updates/upgrades to the software
  • receive customer support
  • be eligible for discounts and special offers

So, what’s new?

Now your license code (that you receive when you buy the software) also includes the expiration date of your maintenance/support subscription. This means that, if you have an active subscription that renews annually, every year you will receive a new license code, and you will have to log into your SuperAdmin interface and activate it, in order to update the expiration date of your maintenance/support subscription.

Please keep in mind that if you don’t have an active maintenance/support subscription, installing a newer version of the software will revert your license back to “free mode”, which has limitations, namely your server will only accept a single client connection at a time.

It is, therefore, of paramount importance that you keep your maintenance/support subscription active, and that you input the new license code into your software every year when your subscription renews.

Licenses are perpetual if you never update/upgrade the software, so maintenance/support subscriptions are not mandatory. But we strongly encourage our customers to keep an active subscription so that they can always install the most recent version of the software.

Thank you.

How to override permissions on subfolders inside the user’s Home VFS

Syncplify.me Server! version: 5.0.0+

As of version 5.0, Syncplify.me Server! allows to override permissions on sub-folders that are physically contained inside a user’s Home VFS.

Let’s say, for example, that the actual directory structure on disk is the one you see in the picture here below:

Clearly you will want to apply different permissions to the various sub-directories under that root, right?

Well, now with Syncplify.me Server! v5 you can do so very easily:

Just one more way Syncplify.me Server! v5 makes an SFTP server administrator’s life easier.
